Kingsteighton School - UK

Kingsteighton School is a free school serving the community of Kingsteighton which lies at the head of the Teign Estuary to the west of Teignmouth, England.

Early in 2019 it moved from temporary premises into a new build and took the opportunity to adopt a serverless design for IT.

The school has adopted Google G Suite for Education for both teaching and administration with students sharing sets of Chromebooks in the classroom.  Younger years have access to iPads managed using the Meraki MDM.

Teachers also use Chromebooks as the principal device, working collaboratively with other team members and students through the facilities provided by G Suite and Google Classroom.  The front office uses Windows 10 workstations with local copies of MS Office used to supplement G Suite.

Management of the Windows workstations uses InTune for Education and Azure AD user accounts in place of a local Active Directory. Files are stored and shared on Google Drive and Team Drives synced to each device using Google File Stream. The school MIS is a delivered as a SaaS service along with related admin functions such as accounts and payroll.

Printing is managed using Printix, a cloud based management system that interfaces with both Azure AD and the Google user directory without the requirement of a local print server. The system has a print release mechanism that operates through the users mobile phone rather than using a PIN system.

Switching is HP Aruba running as a simple flat network supporting an Aerohive wireless system configured using a cloud based Hive Manager. The school runs a local hardware based PABX service currently but is investigating cloud alternatives.

The school has a dedicated 100 Mbs leased line internet connection with content filtering provided by Securly and supported by DNSFilter.  Edge security uses a Watchguard firewall.

A local hardware appliance provides DHCP and acts as a landing site for remote support. DNS has a minor role internally and is operated as an external zone managed by a service provider.

Classrooms have standardised on Promethean LCD screens with embedded Android support. Teachers have the option of connecting the Chromebook using an HDMI cable attaching wireless using ActivConnect or working on the Android platform using the touch facilities provided by the screen. Students also have the ability to use ActivConnect to show work and present wirelessly through a Chrome extension.
